A pair of dead seals found on the shore of Vancouver Island has prompted the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to seal off the beach, with the agency advising people to avoid the area.
Officials say the seal was found near the beach Friday evening and is believed to have died on Saturday morning.
Authorities say they’re continuing to investigate.
Vancouver Island is a popular destination for seal-watching and conservationists have been calling for the beach to be closed.
It’s not clear whether the seal had been spotted before, but the department said it’s not unusual for seals to die on the beach.
The department said the seal’s death was being investigated and the cause of death was not immediately known.
